Whitechapel Superman Challenge by genesischant Whitechapel Superman Challenge by genesischant
Warren Ellis has issued this challenge:

"You are an artist/designer. You have to put together the cover for a comic called SUPERMAN. It is issue 1 of this book.

You have been told that Superman is a man who dresses predominantly in a shade of blue, and wears a red S symbol. You know nothing else about the character.

The cover must include a logo and the text THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE DARING EXPLOITS OF THE ONE AND ONLY SUPERMAN."

So here we are, my Superman cover.
This Superman is a 'Goliath-unit', a type of artificial human created to help the Great Northern Cooperative in their attempt to reclaim the vast wastelands in the continental interior. The armies of the other cloistered powers have emerged to do the same. Rebellion from the resident wastelanders has also slowed the progress substantially.
'Jack' is an Anti-Goliath specialist working with the rebels, and a chance meeting with the rogue Goliath 'Superman' has led to them both wandering the blasted expanse, trying to find meaning in the senselessness of life.

This looks like an interesting twist on the superman title. Very interesting indeed, would definitely like to read a novelization or comic. That would be brilliant!

I suppose nothing of that sort happened, though. Not even a short story per se?

And since the challenge requires you to "know nothing else about the character", we shouldn't expect this world's versions of Lois Lane, Batman, or Lex Luthor, right?

I agree. When I read this challenge, I didn't imagine anything remotely like this. Kudos for taking the concept of a "super-man" and doing something totally different with it.

And just like that, Genesischant makes me smile...and also hunger for a miniseries of what he has drawn.
