Sengoku Avengers: Hulk by genesischant Sengoku Avengers: Hulk by genesischant
Further example of my particular brand of madness-- the 'Sengoku Avengers'-- Marvel's Avengers reimagined as Japanese warring-states era heroes.

The Hulk is reimagined as 'Kaibutsu'.

Nobu Tsubana was a promising young onmyouji in the court of a powerful lord. When news spread of a terrible demon making trouble in the land, Tsubana was among those dispatched to exorcise it. The encounter with the mighty oni went awry, proving too much for any of the sorcerers and priests to handle, and Tsubana was forced to seal the creature inside his own body as a last resort.

Now Tsubana lives as a wandering outcast, for the demon within him will wake if he does not constantly keep his emotions controlled. When the oni stirs within him, he loses his grasp on his sanity as his body and mind both grow more monstrous. He uses meditation and specially prepared seals to keep himself from transforming into a monster.

Now he travels the roads of Japan, applying his skills as an onmyouji where they are needed, and battling fearsome youkai and kami attracted by the strong spiritual presence of the slumbering demon. Needless to say, only a fool would provoke his ire.

Any plans to make Sengoku She-Hulk? or Red Hulk? or Red She-Hulk? or any of the Hulk's villains?

Now THIS is a comic I would love to read. This is my favorite design of these. I love the colors and all the ofuda plastered on his body... he must be terrifying without them.

It was one of the most fun to draw. I based the ofuda on actual seal script for the character "to seal", elaborated on and fabricated of course.

Yeah, I wanted to play up the "slayer of men" aspect of the character, showing lots of history with his body and weapon.

By far my favorite. Very much evoking the version of the Hulk presented in Planet Hulk. The one where The hulk and Banner are insync with their goals in life

The comic was brilliant. The idea that there is a place in the universe where the Hulk and Banner could exist in balance as one entity was amazing. That and they both found a lover who loved them both as they were completely. I still cannot believe they did what they did with that. Heart wrenching but it makes the World War Hulk story even more poignant. Cannot forget the Ghostrider and Hulk part from that where it is realized how much the Illuminati had screwed up.
Sorry for spoilers....
The Animated Planet Hulk was good too

You should give him a kanabo instead of that sword, It's what Oni's traditional wield, and it would emphasize Kaibutsu's destructive potential. On another note, I can't help but imagine Sengoku Ultron as a Butai Karakuri ningyō, a sort of life-sized Japanese automaton used in Karakuri plays, that has been possessed by a Malevolent Youkai.

I debated for a while over the kanabo. I ultimately went for the beat-up sword because I liked the battle-worn image for the character. I also considered a temple sword, when I was thinking of him as an ex-monk. I think he definitely also uses a kanabo from time to time. It's not something his human form can easily carry around, so I'd imagine him pulling it off a statue at a temple or something.

It seems pretty right-on. Robots are tricky, and I think the evil spirit inhabiting dolls angle is a good one.

Not just a doll, an automaton, the ancestor of today's robots.

"Do not provoke my ire, sir. You would not find me pleasant when my ire has been provoked."

Awesome adaption of the original to another setting. (If this wasn't meant to be short and sweet, I would have added, since I like the side characters in comics, that the thing that made Tsubana bind the oni within himself was that it was about to possess a youth, perhaps one who had unwittingly broken a seal, just to have a Rick Jones analogue.)

I was thinking about including some side characters (that's a good call on the seal breaking), but as you said, I was trying to keep it brief. I think I have a tendency to go a little too deep in these artist comment descriptions.
