Watching this great movie recently, wanted to put something together for it. This movie is wonderfully inventive, and if someone was looking for a fun flick to remake, you could do worse. For said hypothetical individual: Keep the black comedy/melodrama/horror tone, the art deco 1930's stylings, and the general plot. Revise Phibes' reasoning for killing folks, make the good guys more interesting, figure out a reason for Vulnavia, and try to be more consistently period-appropriate (I can see your 1970's showing!).
If you've no idea what I'm on about, give it a watch. It's far from perfect, but Vincent Price is awesome, and it's got some really imaginative ways to off people. This "Jigsaw" character has nothing on Phibes. Try designing a frog-mask death-machine in the 1930's, jerk.
Oh my god! I can't believe I found fanart of this by coincidence! Abominable Dr. Phibes was the only movie that scared me as a kid. My dad made me watch it, and I'll never forget the scene where he drilled a hole in the ceiling and poured green shit/locusts all over that one lady. I was maybe seven or eight when I saw it, and I would stay awake for hours convinced he was trying to kill me every time I heard a scrape on the ceiling. I couldn't sleep unless I was under a moving fan for what must've been months. This is amazing! I love the scenes the background especially. Good work!
Wow! I was lucky to see it at an older age, or I'm sure I'd have been traumatized. It's one of those surprisingly effective horror films for its relative lack of guts and gore, and the nearly camp mood.
Yeah! I can watch these newer horror movies all day, they don't do any real 'horror' for me. It was how Phibes was nigh-on unstoppable in his goals, and you didn't know who was in the right that got me.
It would be a challenge, but at least this wasn't a part where you'd need someone to act and voice the role simultaneously. You could cast two actors if you wanted.
