Edopunk Christmas Carol by genesischant Edopunk Christmas Carol by genesischant
The story of a miserly merchant spirited away to learn the virtues of kindness and charity-- on a very special Oshōgatsu night.

Special thanks to *Kryten39 for the idea, and the specific suggestion of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

Very nice - I recognize the God of Abundance (one of the "Lucky Gods") as Christmas Present, but are the other two specifically based on other Shinto deities?

Poor *Ebenezer. Some of those Buddhist hells can be rough. (But at least he gets to leave when his Karma is balanced out!)

In the same way that the book treats the various ghosts, I wanted the Ghost of Christmas Past to be a sprite-like, lantern-carrying character, so I used the more popular human form of the traditional Japanese will-o'-the-wisp. The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is a spectre of death, so I used the undead samurai trope, which is another common sort of ghost. The Ghost of Christmas Present is different from the others in the book too, and needed to be a spirit/god-type character.

Hopefully his buddy Marley gets out soon-- you'd think straightening out Scrooge would count for something.

Oh, brilliant! I'd love to see this version of the story! ...I wonder how differing cultural standards would impact the progression of the tale, if at all?
